Want to Boost Your Mood? 4 Reasons Why Going Outside Can Help!

Personally, I spend a LOT of amount of time indoors. I work from home, about eight to ten hours a day. I sleep for another eight. I also spend leisure time inside, watching tv and scrolling through social media while watching Netflix, both at the same time, without ever giving either one our full and undivided attention.. Also, any free time that I have to go out is usually spent inside of a building, restaurant or some venue.

I, like most people are also stressed out. We’re tired and overworked. We’re struggling to sleep or even relax at the end of the day. We’re facing mental health issues, our moods are all over the place, and our relationships fail. Stress, the divorce rate, reported loneliness and depression are at an all-time high. Are these two things related? Could we reduce our stress-levels, improve our mental health and boost our mood, if we just spent more time outside? Here are just some of the ways that the great outdoors could improve your mood.

Nature is Great for Perspective

There’s a reason that animals are used in therapy like Equine Therapy. Nature, animals, plants, flowers, scenery, and everything that comes with it calms us. It helps us to focus and settle. Nature, the vastness of the space and the beauty all around us has a great way of putting our issues into perspective, which can help us to focus and find solutions, or even just to let the small stuff go.

Vitamin D Booster

Many of us suffer from seasonal affective disorder, or sad. This is when we get depressed in the winter. As though the weather is literally bringing down our mood. There are a few different causes of sad, but one of them is a lack of vitamin D, due to a lack of sunlight as we spend all of our time cooped up indoors.

Unlike most other vitamins, vitamin D isn’t found in high quantities in any food, so it’s hard to replicate. Get outside, soak up some vitamin D and perhaps your risks of depression could be drastically reduced. Even in the summer, if you are spending all of your time inside, and away from a natural light source, you could find that your mood is affected.

Exercise and All the Benefits that Come with It

Sitting behind a desk all day isn’t great for burning calories. If you spend all of your time indoors, you might struggle with weight and fitness levels. Getting outside, even for a short walk, can help you to burn more calories and improve your health and fitness. More intense exercise can also improve your mood by boosting the adrenaline and serotonin levels in your brain.

Human Contact

Modern life, despite being ever connected, is lonely. Getting away from your computer and getting outside makes you more likely to connect with real people. The internet is great, but when it comes to a mood boost, nothing beats human contact.

What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
Until Next Time...
