When it comes to your health, things aren’t always as straightforward as you think. And, it’s not all about medicine, diet and/or exercise either. So let’s take a look at three important areas of your health that are often overlooked and that you ought to be more conscious of.

1. Nutrition

To start with, you’ll find that you should think about nutrition a lot more. It’s easy to overlook it and think that food isn’t important but it can make all the difference to your health. When you start to see food differently, and nourish your body with the best possible ingredients, you’ll notice the difference in how you look and feel.  This doesn’t just mean that you should only eat organic salads for the rest of your life.  If eating ice cream with your family every once in a while makes you smile, then do it.  Moderation is always key and never view yourself as “naughty” if you indulge every now and then.

2. Mental Health

Next up is mental health. It’s so important that you can start to recognize the importance of your own mind and the health of it. If you don’t take care of your mental health, you’ll never really feel your best. So, you have to recognize when you’re feeling low and the triggers/warning signs of that in order to bring more happiness into your life.

3. Environmental Health

You may also find that you have to make more conscious decisions when it comes to your lifestyle and the environment too. Because what’s around your body can be just as important as what goes into your body.  So, ask yourself – are there stressors in my life that can be avoided? Like toxic friendships, negative relationships, unproductive workspaces, etc.? Perhaps there are even more ways to reduce stressors by living a more sustainable life by walking/cycling to your destinations. If you can achieve this, it just may help. Just take a look at the infographic below to find out more about this in your community.

I’m getting older and keeping my body functioning optimally is getting more and more complicated.  Lately there have been a few adjustments that I’ve been making to try and stay in good condition, minimalize injury and avoid the development of sickness and disease. One of the hardest of these adjustments has been changes in my diet.  The truth is, when it comes to health and wellbeing, diet is a large part of how our body works.

Here are some things that I’ve been trying:

  • Eat a wide variety of foods including plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Replace saturated with unsaturated fat
  • Reduce salt (not entirely) and sugar intake
  • Eating regularly and at the same time every day
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get on the move and make it a habit

We can break down the concept of overall health into some categories. These generally include the physical body, the psyche with emotional and behavioral health.

Physically Taking Care Of Your Body

This means moving and getting regular exercise. This is a hard one for me.  I work at a desk- at home...ugh…  Lately I’ve been focusing on reaching the general 10,000 steps goal.  I purchased a new fitbit- my old one was really old and not fun to use! Next, I’ll re-introduce water aerobics and then add some other things.   Although, there are many forms of exercise that you can do, I'm sticking to something simple like walking that extra mile or swimming so that I can get accustomed to being more active during the day..

Exercise will help clear the metaphorical cobwebs and help attune all of your organs. Not only can regular movement help greatly reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems developing, but it also helps regulate the endocrine system which controls the hormones and provide you with a healthy dose of serotonin and dopamine.

Sleep and Recovery

We all need to make an effort to get enough sleep and need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night.  Working from home has thrown my sleep schedule all over the place and I’m currently working on getting it back on track. The key with a great sleep is to get the same routine sleep so your body can regulate recovery through deep sleep. Healthy sleep will boost concentration, positive mood,  productivity and helps regulate recovery and health.

Mental Health and the Mind

Part of being able to do some of the things that I mentioned above is having a healthy operating mind. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with the brain and stop if functioning correctly. Most commonly, stress is something that can go unnoticed and creep up on you subconsciously. No one can avoid stress, but the key is to learn how to manage it. Being human we sometimes thrive from being under pressure, but that pressure is usually dropped when we accomplish something. When pressure develops that is constant which sometimes can’t be achieved straight away, generates stress. Knowing when and how to reduce the pressure will help you stay calm and be able to function better in stressful situations.

Protect Your Health

One final way to look after ourselves is to make sure we have the correct help available in case of any form of imbalance to the body. Whether it is your physiotherapist or general practitioner, receiving urgent care is key to recovering. It is important that any symptoms or signs of ailments developing, that they are seen to by a medical professional.  I usually attend all of my annual appointments like pcp, dental and pap but I don’t always go in between when something is wrong.  I “tough it out” and now that I’m getting older, that’s not the best thing to do.

Being at optimal health is a priority for all of us no matter what our size or background, and being different we all have to consider different approaches to our needs. Let me know if there is anything that I missed off the list in the comments below.

Can you believe it?!  July is already here!  Summer is in full effect and it’s already Independence Day!  My family is usually pretty low key on the 4th of July.  We’ll most likely fire up the grill and chill. We ALWAYS have something to sip on and this year will be no different.  When I first saw Smirnoff’s Red, White & Berry Vodka last year, I knew I wanted to try it.  Unfortunately, it’s obviously a seasonal spirit and I wasn’t quick enough to get it before it was gone.  If you haven’t tried it yet and you’re wondering what it tastes like, it is vodka that is infused with juicy cherry, citrus and sweet blue raspberry flavors.  Better yet, it tastes just like a spiked bomb pop.  Remember those little red, white & blue popsicles?  Yep, those!  It’s sweet and tasty enough to drink straight but, that’s no fun!  This year, I wanted to catch it but by the time that I made it to my local package shop, all of the big bottles were gone.  The only thing left were these cute little shooters so I decided to use them to top off this drink and make it super cute!

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

2 Ounces of Pineapple Juice
2 Ounces of Simple Syrup
2 Ounces of Blue Curacao
2 Ounces of Simply Syrup
Ice (enough to fill to the top of the liquid)
Whipped Cream, cherries and a shooter of Smirnoff Red, White & Berry Vodka

Instructions:

As I said above, this drink is super easy to make.  I just threw all of the ingredients into my nutribullet blender and blended until smooth.  The color is so pretty too!  Blue is one of my favorite hues.  I poured the mixture into a hurricane/cocktail glass, topped it with whipped cream and cherries.  Last, but not least, I jammed that Smirnoff Red, White & Berry Vodka shooter into it for uh…..those of us who appreciate an extra “kick”!  Lol  As always, you can play around with the liquors and the sweets to find a combo that’s right for your taste.
