Getting Back On Track - Dust Yourself Off and Try Again

Sometimes in life things, for whatever reason, go a little bit off track. The great thing is in most cases we can fix them and move forward. It could be the loss of a job or a loved one, or it might be that you’re just going through a rough time and need a little help.

After all, we have all been there. We’ve started something with the best intentions, and it’s gone a bit wrong. We’ve all had an idea of where we wanted to be at a certain age. And sometimes it feels like nothing is going right at all.

When things do go wrong, it is imperative that you don’t view yourself as a failure. Everyone makes mistakes - it is how you deal with them that makes the difference.

So what can we do to help ourselves?

Write It Down

When it comes to sorting through things, writing can be a healing thing to do. You might opt to do it in the form of journaling. Writing down something that has been great each day, sticking in notes, photos and other things that have given you some joy. Or, you might prefer to write the things that are bothering you, as a way to process them. Writing is a powerful tool. You never have to share your words with someone else if you don’t want to, or even keep the pages after you’ve written them.

Plan Things

If you find yourself feeling a bit lost and aimless then planning things to fill your hours is an excellent idea. If you used to enjoy a particular hobby, then try introducing that back into your life. Try and fit in a walk each day. It doesn't have to be long, you can pop some headphones in and listen to your favorite tunes while you walk.

Seek Help
If you know that you are going to need professional help with unpacking mental health stuff or kicking a habit that just isn’t good for you, then seek it out. A sober living community is a great place to start for those things that need more than just a gentle hand. If you need help ask for it, you will find in most cases someone will be there, ready to support you.

Positive

Even in the darkest of times, there is a myriad of positive things. Think about what and who is positive in yours. Think about the people you know, how they have impacted your life and you theirs. Make a point of spending a few minutes each day thinking about all of the good in your life. Self-care

This is one is very important. It is easy to feel like you have failed and you aren’t worthy of self-care. But, that is just not true. No matter what has been going on you deserve to be happy, and if that is in the form of a hot bath and a mug of coffee then do it. If that is a 30-minute nap or painting? Do that too. Doing what makes you happy can help you bring even more positivity to your life - exactly when you need it.
Until Next Time...
