Getting Proactive About Sensitive Skin

Your skin is the largest organ your body has and sometimes it is not always realized just how sensitive it can be. Some people are very lucky and have no problems at all, but there are others- like myself, whose skin is so sensitive it needs special care.

Caring for Sensitive Skin

There are many problems you can get with sensitive skin.  Your skin could become very dry/flaky, you may have breakouts for no apparent reason or you could suffer from psoriasis symptoms. You can reduce the risk of any of these things happening by having a daily routine for skin care.

Start with a gentle cleanser that is for sensitive skin. Put it on gently and never rub your skin hard.  This was something that I had to get used to.  I was taught to SCRUB!  Then use an alcohol-free toner to deep clean your skin. This is especially important if you are prone to acne. Next, moisturize with a fragrance-free cream that is meant for your skin type. Many moisturizers have salicylic acid in them and although this is good for anti-aging and acne, many people find they are allergic to it.

Start each day with this routine and hopefully you will soon see the benefits of softer and smoother skin.

Things to Avoid If You Have Sensitive Skin

As well as doing things that will help your skin, it is great to also be proactive.  There are some things you should avoid as they may damage it.  Don’t use beauty products that contain harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate. They can irritate and dry your skin and some people are allergic to them. Products with Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide should also be avoided.

Never use hard brushes, loofas or rough towels on your skin, as they will irate even the mildest of infection or breakout you may already have.

This one I can’t stress enough- wash your hands often and keep them out of your face!  You can easily pick up germs and viruses just in everyday life, and you need to keep these away from your skin as much as possible.

Other Sensitive Skin Care Tips

A gentle exfoliating scrub and facial mask can be very good for removing dead cells and putting nutrients into your skin. Ones with Kaolin Clay in them are perfect for this.

Eat a balanced diet that does not have too many carbs and sugars in.  Foods with plenty of vitamins, such as fruits, vegetables, and salads, can help to keep your sensitive skin in good condition.

Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption as they both have dehydrating effects that are bad for all skin types. Alcohol can tend to make your skin look red and blotchy while smoking will make it look dull and unhealthy.

Drink plenty of water as the skin of a well-hydrated body will always look better. Aim for eight cups of water a day if you want soft and supple skin.

Your skin has many functions but is the only organ that is exposed to the elements. It needs taking care of no matter what skin type you are, but even more so if it is sensitive.

Until Next Time...
